Tsunami Advisory number 2 for Vanuatu issued by the Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department Port Vila at 10:00 am, Friday, 29 April 2016
At 07:24 am local time 29 April 2016, an earthquake of magnitude 7.0 was located at 16.21oS, 167.45oE with a depth of 10 Kilometers. This is about 4.0 Kilometers west of Litzlitz village of northeast Malekula and about 45 Kilometers northwest of Lamap in the southeast of Malekula in the MALAMPA province.
There were no reports of destructive tsunami being observed along the eastern coastal areas of Malekula Island and the neighbouring islands of MALAMPA, SANMA and PENAMA provinces during the last three hours. Based on the information received, the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) advises people in the islands and the provinces mentioned that the Tsunami threat has now passed. It is now safe for people to return to their places of residence.
This will be the final Advisory on the Tsunami unless the situation changes.
